BaySpec, Inc., founded in 1999 with 100% manufacturing in the USA (San Jose, California), is a vertically integrated spectral sensing company. The company designs, manufactures and markets advanced spectral instruments, including UV-VIS-NIR-SWIR spectrometers, benchtop and portable NIR/SWIR, hyperspectral imagers, mass spectrometers, and OEM spectral engines and components, for the R&D, biomedical, pharmaceuticals, chemical, food, semiconductor, health monitoring, human & animal medical devices, and the optical telecommunications industries.

BaySpec, Inc. was founded by optical engineers on the premise of manufacturing rugged, reliable, high-performance devices. Despite the company’s relatively small size, we weathered the boom and bust of the telecommunications technology industry, outperforming many large competitors to become one of the market leaders, having shipped more than 35,000 different spectroscopic systems. The same approaches that enabled our systems to weather the telecom competition have also been utilized in our spectroscopy devices.

Unlike most optical device companies today, BaySpec manufactures every major component of our systems in-house in the USA. From packaging the detectors, to manufacturing the gratings, to developing the control electronics and operating software, we do it all in our Silicon Valley headquarters. This vertical integration allows us to be much more creative and extremely cost-effective, truly setting BaySpec apart from the competition.

Telecom & Fiber Sensing

BaySpec designs, manufactures and markets advanced spectral instruments and light sources for telecommunications and fiber optic sensing industries, with more than 35,000 units deployed around the globe. These products include: optical channel performance monitors (OPM, OCPM, OCM), optical spectrum analyzers, erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, fiber Bragg grating interrogation analyzers, broadband light sources, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) light sources, narrowband and wideband light sources, and volume phase transmission gratings.

Mass Spectrometers
The new miniature mass spectrometers from BaySpec are based on proprietary linear ion trap technology that offers unparalleled performance. All BaySpec mass spectrometers are compatible with in situ and real-time ionization methods including electron impact (EI), thermal desorption (TD), electrospray ionization (ESI), atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), and any other ambient ionization techniques such as DART and DESI. These extremely compact instruments are very easy to operate and maintain and are ideal for a variety of bulk or trace on-site detection in real time.

Hyperspectral Imagers
Hyperspectral imaging, like other spectral imaging, collects and processes information from across the electromagnetic spectrum. The goal of such imaging is to obtain spectra for each pixel in an image, with the intent of finding objects, identifying materials, or detecting processes. Whereas the human eye sees color of only the visible light spectrum, in mostly three bands (long wavelengths – red, medium wavelengths – green, and short wavelengths – blue), hyperspectral imaging see a broader range of wavelengths extending beyond the visible. BaySpec builds hyperspectral sensors and processing systems for a vast array of potential and theoritical applications, including astronomy, agriculture, molecular biology, biomedical imaging, geosciences, physics, and surveillance.

BaySpec’s SuperGamut™ series UV, Visible, Near-Infrared (NIR), and Short-Wave-Infrared (SWIR) spectrometers are designed to meet real-world challenges for best-in-class performance, long-term reliability, compact size and ultra-low power consumption. The core, VPG grating, offers these spectrometers rapid acquisition (“one-shot”) with high efficiency and spectral resolution.
